Even desert-adapted plants can struggle when long stretches of triple-digit weather combine with intense sun, hot wind, and low humidity.


Understanding what heat does inside the plant makes it easier to spot problems early and respond in the right way. Some damage is temporary. Some is permanent. The difference often comes down to water timing, soil protection, shade, and choosing plants that can handle the Mojave Desert climate.

Why Las Vegas summer heat is so hard on plants


Plants survive heat by balancing two needs. They need sunlight for energy, but they also need to keep their tissues cool enough to function. In Las Vegas, that balance becomes difficult because several stress factors happen at once.


Summer conditions often include:


  • Very high daytime temperatures

  • Warm nights that give plants little recovery time

  • Low humidity that pulls moisture from leaves

  • Hot winds that speed up water loss

  • Reflective heat from walls, rock, concrete, and pavement

  • Fast-draining or compacted soils that may not hold water well


A plant in mild heat can cool itself by releasing water vapor through tiny openings in its leaves. This process is similar to sweating. In Las Vegas, the air is so dry that plants can lose water faster than their roots can replace it. When that happens, they close those leaf openings to conserve moisture.


That protects the plant from drying out, but it also slows growth. Once the plant closes those openings, it takes in less carbon dioxide, which it needs for photosynthesis. The result is a plant that may still be alive but no longer growing well.

Heat damage does not look the same on every plant. A cactus, a citrus tree, a rose, and a vegetable plant will all show stress differently. Still, there are common signs that point to heat as the main cause.


Leaves may wilt, curl, scorch, or fade


Wilting is one of the first and most visible signs. During extreme afternoon heat, some plants wilt even when the soil contains moisture. This happens because the leaves are losing water faster than the roots can move it upward.


If the plant perks up by morning, the stress is likely temporary. If it stays wilted overnight, the root zone may be too dry, damaged, or overheated.


Leaf scorch is another common sign. It often appears as:


  • Brown or tan leaf edges

On trees, sunscald may show as cracked, discolored, or sunken bark, often on the southwest side of the trunk. On succulents and cacti, it can look like bleached, yellow, tan, or corky patches. The damaged tissue may not heal back to its original appearance.

Dry soil can become difficult to rewet


When soil gets extremely dry, water may run off or channel through cracks instead of soaking evenly into the root zone. This is especially common in compacted soil or areas watered too quickly.
